MARIA:

Luis Barragán

EVELYN:

AKRAM:

The Original Champions of Design(OCD)的Jennifer Kinon。

YU TING:

Introducing Joe: Our Design Dose

November 29, 2019

Let’s take a look at what we have this week:

MARIA:

Luis Barragán

María was introduced to the Mexican architect - Luis Ramiro Barragán Morfín - by her mother, who also used to be an architect. “He’s one of the reasons why I got into design,” was what she said to us.

Casa Barragán is one of Barragán’s masterpieces (also María’s favourite), which combines three important elements - space, light and colours. Nature’s movement works with Barragán’s architecture to create an experience that constantly evolving, just like life itself.

María loves how his design is so calculated yet organic at the same time. She believes that the proper use of colour can create an emotional experience that resonates with everyone.

EVELYN:

Da Maria Bali

Guess who just came back from the sunny island of Indonesia, flaunting her sun-kissed skin and sharing her surfing photos?

Evelyn loves food (and so do the rest of us). While she was doing research for her trip to Bali, she came across Da Maria Bali’s Instagram. As a designer and a foodie, Da Maria Bali’s branding and online marketing really hit the spot for her.

While all of us have never been to the modern Italian restaurant, staring at its vibrant interiors and numerous pizza photos really took us (and our tummies) there. We also marveled at their Swiss-style event posters that had a very contemporary and chic look to it.

“Everything is so well put together - the food, the interior, the marketing. It really made me want to go there,” Evelyn told us with glittering eyes.

AKRAM:

Branding of The Hillary Clinton Campaign

One of Akram’s favourite brand designs is for the Hillary Clinton Campaign in 2016. The campaign’s logo was produced by Micahel Bierut, partner at Pentagram, while the design director is Jennifer Kinon from The Original Champions of Design (OCD).

“I really like how adaptable and clever the logo design is, and how OCD managed to implement cohesive visual systems, which is not common for campaign designs back then,” said Akram.

Akram places a huge emphasis on research when it comes to design. He is always on the lookout for best practices when it comes to brand design. He shared a few more works with us and mentioned a few designers that he takes inspiration from, but we will save that for the next post!

YU TING:

Polestar Cube

Yu Ting shared a video tour of the Polestar’s headquarters designed by Swedish architecture firm Bornstein Lyckefors. She was really inspired by the minimalist and avant-garde design that focused on functionality and identity.

“Offices have evolved so much over the past decade. While I’m not fond of working in dull cubicles, I also have reservations about working in spaces that make you feel like you are at home. To me, an ideal office design balances functionality and comfort. It should enable me to work more efficiently but not take away the essence of living,” she says with much conviction.

It made us all wonder what kind of space would be ideal for us to work in.
